Hey, someone asked me to make a music PC for him, but the only problem is that I don't know what soundcard to choose. He'll be using hardware (synths, rack-modules, maybe samplers, mixer), so some kind of midi-connectorstuff will be needed.
Any tips (plz include approx price
)
Tia!

don't go for creative soundcards, they're ok to play games, watch movies etc. and even with the latest 2.1 inspire sets they're okay for mastering.
But no way you're buying them for a real hardware setup.
I'd suggest you'd go for Yamaha soundcards (the good ones
)
You could check www.interface.nl for some soundcard reviews there, interface is a soft- and hardware magazine (monthly). Very trustable source it is.

Don't take Creative, it has very bad A/D-D/A conversion (view frequency response graph here compared to a Terratec DMX 6fire). Creative Audigy is worthless for making music...
I would take a different MIDI port, not necessarily integrated on the sound card, because you need at least 4 seperate MIDI outs anyway to be able to make quality productions, if you string more than 3 MIDI in / thru connections the MIDI delay becomes really awful.
For a sound card, I have looked at a lot of them and I have just ordered the RME DIGI96/8 PAD + I'm going to hook up an RME ADI-8 PRO to it so I have 10 analog ins and outs.
What's also a very good sound card for a reasonable price is the Digidesign Digi001, I used to have one and was very pleased with it, and you can also have 16 analog ins and outs if you hook up an RME ADI-8 Pro (or another converter that support the ADAT lightpipe, such as the Presonus Digimax 96k or the Focusrite Platinum OctoPre)
For MIDI interfaces have a look at MOTU, they also make sound cards, but I have never heard them, although I heard that they sound good.
Terratec is also cheap for a lot of features, but is often difficult to configure and they always seem to have problems...

Well, I was thinking of a Terratec DMX 6fire 24/96 or a M-Audio Audiophile (maybe USB, maybe integrated, not shure yet)
Those 2 cost somehwere about €250

But the Live! Value doesn't have that
Think I'm going for the Terratec or M-Audio...

LOL
BTW on the site of Right Mark is a text that explains that the bad response graph of the Creative Audigy is caused by the card being set in 'game mode' by default. There seems to be a manual written specifically on how to change settings to the sound card so you get a flatter response.
... and I thought the Audigy was marketed as a musician's sound card
