They worth the money? |
I A-B listened them in the shop for some time... the other pair was Krk Rockit V8.
I took the Yamaha's because of the better filled out low end which sounded realistic (and not boomy) without the use of a sub. The only problem I have now is that the room in which I use them is pretty small and for good results I would need at least a 50cm distance from all walls especially for bass. But I can't get to this distance so the bass could be better. I don't think buying any other monitors would solve that problem fully though.
I never even considered buying a sub because it would not work in a small room and it would get the neighbours mad. |
THESE ARE WELL KNOW AWSOME STUDIO MONITORS. YOU LOOK AT ANY STUDIO PIC YOU'LL SEE THE YAMAHA'S CLASSIC WHITE SPEAKERS THERE. the true ones are no longer in production but on ebay. the actual way to use the old ones was 2 ply tissue over the speakers to cut down on the high end. the other ones that come out now are a bit less high end.
they were oringally aux mics to be used out doors for your padio. quite an interesting tale.

Or a slightly cheaper option are the Yamaha MSP5 Studio. They're similar to the adams in terms of a clear high end, but the bass on them is sick too. Plus as far as I'm aware they don't need so far away from the wall to give a truer bass response.

audio technica ATH-PRO5 headphones (which arnt pro), some i-pod earphones and several pairs of 50pence earphones, people get in a right stress if i play music at any decent level out ere!
used to have ns10m studios but tbh they didnt do me any good at all. like halph price said, they were originally just crappy speakers, so my advice is just make music on lots of different crappy speakers - but compare your tune to other tunes all the time. my bass test is to play it on the pc speakers, there is a certain level of fartiness i get from them when the bass is at a good level. anyways, i rekon if ur pro and want a studio, get some proper bo monitors but otherwise buy a fast car (from the eighties)

I've done all my production on headphones for the past nine months or so... Never really gave it it a thought but now my ears are hurting. Would switching to monitors help my hearing at all? The only problem is that I'm in college and moving around a lot, so they'd have to be (relatively) portable- moved every five months or so.

They're nice, but a little weak on the low end in my opinion (I own and use these guys, he he, they are my monitors). Good for drums and stuff, but purchase a goos subwoofer if you really want to "feel" the bass.
Or just hook up to your buddy's old 1972 Yamaha Amp and two equally old speakers. I swear those things bring out the shake factor like no other, even when playing lousy MP3s! That and the amp adds some warmth I think.
Old school.

yeh those adam a7's are f**kin sweet, heard em in a shop not too long ago, pretty flat and the mids/ highs are superb but it is a bit lacking in bass, a sub is needed with em really but in the latest sub focus vid from computer music this month, sub focus talks about his monitors being a little bass light but he puts his hand on the cone and feels for the pumpin action and checks the consistancy of it, good method i reckon to use as your compressing the sub to check that its a consistant pumping through-out.

i did a basic acoustic analysis of my room and its f**kin aweful. i calculated the critical distance (i.e. the point where the direct sound meets the couloured sound reflected from the back walls), then did an rt60 calculation and an axial mode analysis, axial mode is better for accessing high frequencies and rt60 at lower frequencies because modes are more common in the lower end of the spectrum....bin reading up on acoustics lately, waaaaay too complicated for me (tangential modes, TORT analysis
), couple of bass traps and some absorbant materials (rugs, carpet etc) should do a decent job.....where do you place bass traps, im guessing in the corners to stop reflections but i aint sure?
