Anyone know of any good software (preferably free Big Grin ) that can tell you the health/condition of your hard drives?

Cheers Big Grin

Hard drives have a built in diagnostics system called SMART which is intended to discover when a disaster is looming. Unfortunately in my experience it does not work very well. It may report that everything is perfectly fine, and the drive may break down 10 minutes later.

Best thing is to make regular backups and don't put your trust in diagnostics.

Well i have just installed two hard drives from my old pc to go with the two I got in my new pc

But they do sit quite close to each other in the case so was worried they might be making each other a bit too warm.

But their temps seem to be fine Confused

that's why you run a RAID 5 setup and you don't have to back-up. it does it for you.

yeah i'm still pretty new to the whole RAID thing. right now i got an internal 1TB drive and since reading about RAID i've been thinking of getting a second identical drive. i think then i would feel a hell of a lot less nervous about storing my life on it. Tongue i hear though you need to have a RAID controller which has to be purchased seperately, but i don't know anything about them. Confused guess i got a lot to learn.

edit: yeah appears you have to have a minimum of 3 drives to run a RAID configuration and overall seems to be a pretty expensive thing to do. blehh.

sorry didn't mean to change subjects here.

you can do a RAID 2 setup, it just if one drive goes down then you'll only lose partial amount, with a 3 raid setup if one goes, you still have 100% data integrity. so still not a horrible idea.
