I recently downloaded a DnB radioshow from BBC's 1Extra and the host of the show said something like "Get ready for some massive bassline illness".

Is it illegal to sample this? Does anyone own copyright on this audio?

Read it for yourself here: Law on Copyright and Neighboring Rights, Law of June 30, 1994.

More specifically article 44:
quote:
Section 6: Provisions on Broadcasting Organizations
Art. 44.
The written agreement of the broadcasting organization shall be required to carry out the following acts:
(a) simultaneous or subsequent rebroadcasting of its broadcasts, including retransmission by cable and communication to the public by satellite;
(b) reproduction of its broadcasts by any process whatsoever, including the distribution of fixations of its broadcasts;
(c) communication of its broadcasts carried out in a place accessible to the public on payment of an entrance fee.

The right of distribution referred to in item (b) of the first paragraph shall only be exhausted in the event of first sale, within the European Union, of the fixation of the broadcast by the broadcasting organization or with its consent.

Art. 45.
The protection referred to in Article 44 shall subsist for 50 years after the first diffusion of the broadcast.

This duration shall be calculated as from January 1 of the year following the event that gives rise to it.

Summing up, you need to have written permission to sample radio broadcasts (or any other broadcast), unless the broadcast is more than 50 years old.

UNLESS YOU'RE DOING A LIVE PREFORMANCE, YOU CAN'T COPY IT WITHOUT PERMISSION.

live preformance has a blanket copyright fee.

yeah seriously dont worry about it. They wouldnt care probably even if they did recognise it, and unless you are selling more than any other dnb producer in the game they are not gonna be bothered to chase it up.

you can ask them, they can say yes. usually the hardest part of copyright issues to get is the Master Copy rights, the "p" one which allows you to use recordings, that usually the record company owns. the other one the lyrics part is easier to get if you ask most artist if you want to do a cover.
