sorry, i wasn't being very clear - yeah, 5-1-3 COULD refer to a chord sequence, but what i actually meant was use chords in their inversions for a more floaty, less grounded feeling.

ie. a C major triad (C-E-G) uses the 1st, 3rd and 5th notes of C major.

but you can flip the notes so the E is on the bottom (E-G-C)

or so the G is (G-C-E)

so, E-G-C is C major triad in its 1st invesion

G-C-E is C major trian in its 2nd inversion

What I do is first a make a loop of chords. After that I move the notes in octaves so that it sounds nice, and often so that the chords is at the same place of the keyboard. That gives a tight sound. In wich order the notes are does not matter if the bass plays the keynote.

I think what peaple are trying to say is that the chords in liquid are very nice, not ugly like.. hmmm.. whatever. In soul they use minor7, and major7, minor9 is nice to... But if you listen to high contrast for example he samples much, in some of the tunes he might have sampled the chords and not come up with them by himself. I think you should sample soul music and add bass and drums and make melodys over. You can ofcourse come up with chords to, try different notes and put together them to chords. Also one tip might be to find what chords there are in soultunes you like, I'm shure you can find them on the net.

That's one way, depends on what sound you want. There are another more soul influenced sound that for example london electricity and high contrast are into.

you can get a command 8 where the 002 is intergrated.

LINK

buying that would save you lots of money than buy each separatly and you also get some extra plugins with that Big Grin

Yeah, but in sweden there is a bundle with digi002 and command8 that's pretty cheap.

Thats why I would rewire protools with reason, to get synths. I would get the digi002 rack and command8 for pro tools.

If I choose Logic I would probably choose RME soundcard with 4 micpreamps.

oh and where are those sisters of yours? Big Grin

I've tried ableton and I didn't like it. It's to modern, and I like Fl Studio wich is oldscool patternbased stepsequencer. The main thing is the sequencer in ableton wich I think sucks.

Not an option! I can't get along with ableton! I think it's leaning towards Logic though.

you could just do the label thing yourself. youll get a better percentage, and marketing isnt that difficult these days thanks to the tinterweb. but getting in some big djs boxes could b an issue without good contacts. and if it doesnt sell then all the cost is on you

Why knot do it white? Is it a must to have a label? Btw some peaple claim that it doesn't cost much

1) once you made your (killer) tune you should give it to as many (top) dj's as possible (on a cd) if they like it THEY will get a dub plate cut or just use the cd you gave them. if there not intrested or tell you its no good then STOP !!! and re-think or do another track till you get the right feed back !!!!!

2) once you have some of the (top) dj's asking to cut your track, then you can think about pressing up your track !!!

3) right, you can do one of three things here .... first option is ......

1) find a distributor that will distribute your track and press the vinyl your self, my advice is to only press about 500 to 1000 with black and white labels (costs around £800 to £1100) so if you sell all of them you will get your money back + enuff for a bag of chips and may be a pie to go with it, lol (you ruffly get £2 to £2.50 for every unit (track) sold (dont quote me on that) but if it does take off and its a BIG tune then you will get re-presses done and thats when the money starts coming in ......

then there is option 2 ......

2) try to get a p&d deal (press & distribution) from a distributor, they press your vinyl and distribute it to the shops world wide, they sell it and you get a percentage of the profits. ruffly 50% after costs (dont quote me on that) lol, but be lucky trying to find someone whos gonna take the risk on your first tune !!!!! .........

and lastly there is option 3 .....

3) if your tunes are that GOOD then you might try sending it to other labels to see if they want to release it, that way it dont cost you a penny and you will get your foot in the door. again expect ruffly 50% of the profit AFTER COSTS !!! but be carefull ..... the words SHARKS come to mind, lol

right wear was i hmmmmmmmm ow yess theres another option ....... go the mp3 way, that wont cost you a penny ether Smile theres lots of digital distributors out there.

ooohh yes if your planning on pressing your own vinyl then ......... you got to get it mastered on to a 12" laquer, then get the metal plates done (cost about £300) then from the matal plates they can start pressing your records (ruffly 50p a record) then you got to get your art work sorted out to there requirements ........ blah blah blah ...... oohhh im boreing myself now

i hope that made sense ????????

any way, i started by pressing up 500 vinyls and taking it round to the top distributors (work from the top, downwards) most was NOT interested because it was my first tune !!!! but a small distributor took it (bless them) and the tune BLOW UP !!! then i had ALL the top distributors on the phone wanting a peace (yyyiipppeee) any way im babbling again (sorry)

hope that helps your question Smile

This is a great answer! But I wonder about the "distribution alternative" (1. find a distributor that will...). Should I send dubplates by mail to the distributors or should I send them by CDs?
Is it possible to have a distributor-deal withought having a label?

A bootstrap compressor works by compressing the signal that is *below* a certain threshold, so it keeps the peaks intact but reduces the dynamics by bringing up the soft parts.

Many expanders can do this too, if they allow the ratio to be turned the other way, e.g. a 3:1 ratio instead of a 1:3 ratio.

You can do this in any dynamic processor that allows you to adjust the ratio below a certain threshold. Check out the screenshot from Sound Forge below.

Really cool! But I think it needs to be combined with ordinary compression to get the punch of the attack slippin trough the compressor. This adds more energy to the transients.
Can rhis be done with waves expanders?
