I will ask this kindly just as I have before...STOP SAYING TWO NOTES IN A ROW WITH SCALES...I know they are the same notes in regards to pitch but not in scales, it makes a difference when dealing with chords which will happen eventually. (Dethworm it should read C-Db-E-F-G-Ab-Bb-C)

Halph D-D#(EB!)-F-G-A-B-C-D is not a key per say, you could argue its some weird modal key but its not D minor or B natural minor or anything close to that. D natural minor is D-E-F-G-A-Bb-C-D. Also Fourths arn't usually used in power chords, thats 5ths and Octaves.

The Bordem Practical Music Theory Series

The aim of this series is to introduce functional and pracitcal music theory concepts for your typical electronic music producer.
The concepts elberated on in this series are usable in really any style but will be geared more towards the use of electronic
music; particularly those that use piano rolls. This series will assume you know which notes are which on a piano.

Lesson One: The Basics

I think that there is a question that needs answering, "What is music theory?" Music Theory is the practice of analyzing and
creating music in a structural and intelligable manner. It is a way to answer questions such as "Why did they put that chord
there?" or "I wonder what rhythm is?" However, the manner in which we analyze and structure the music is still a subjective
task no matter how many "rules" there are, hence it being theory and not fact. Many forms of music can be broken down into patterns
whether it is rhymthicaly, tonally, chord progession, etc. however there are some things music theorists have to simply say
"We don't know why they did it that way...probably cause they liked the way it sounded."

This is not intended to be an end all course in music theory, hardly. If anything I am barely qualified to teach such a process.
However when dealing with how to practically utilize it, I believe I am more that adequet. So with that all said lets begin!


-Steps and Scales

Western music is based on a set of 12 evenly spaced notes and their corrospodning octaves. It is from these notes we have
over the years (Somewhere between 2,000 to 3,000 of years to be more accurate) developed patterns in spacing of playing these notes
that have lead to the development of scales. Now in order to grasp a functional level of scales you must know the concept of a step.

The act of moving from one note to the next immeditate note is a half step; think of this as moving from a white key to a black key
on a keyboard. However, moving from B to C and E to G are also half steps even though they are both white keys. Why is this? Well
because there are no notes in between; if there were it would be a quartertone which does not exist in Western Theory. Make sure you
ingrain that into your head; B-C and E-G are HALF STEPS not whole steps! Which brings me to my next point, whole steps.
Whole steps are simply two halfs steps in a row so a white key to white key (except B-C and E-G!) or a black key to black key.

As stated before scales are simply varitions in what order we put half steps and whole steps that almost always end up being 8 notes
long. The first and last notes of the scale are an octave, aka the same note but either double or half the fundemental frequency of
previous note. So C4 is double the frequency of C3 but half the frequency of C5. Also remember, almost all scales have a b or #
sign which means either flat or sharp and these are known as accidentals. These are to help maintain correct order of the whole and
half steps as you start using black keys (and some rare occasions, white keys as well!). In addition, bb means double flat and X means
double sharp. Since it is by far the most common scale in all of music, let us take a look at the Major Scale; a 7 note scale.

The step spacing for this scale is as follows W-W-H-W-W-W-H. If we started on C for a C Major Sclae, we would get these notes
C-D-E-F-G-A-B-(C) and the spacing between C-D is a whole step, as is D-E, E-F is a half, etc. Now what if we want an F Major scale?
That scale would start on F and give you F-G-A-Bb-C-D-E-F. But wait, why Bb!?!? Well remember, we need a half step between notes 3
and 4, and using B instead of Bb would be a whole step. Something to keep in mind, when writing out scales and chords, never repeat
the same note with a different accidental (the b or # sign) So for example if we did F-G-A-A#...whoops we just repeated the letter A
and now have no room for a B, DONT DO THAT EVER! If you write out a scale and you get double letter names, switch from flats to sharps
or vice versa. Remeber, even though for example A# and Bb sound the same and are the same spot on the keyboard, they are not the same
for building scales or chords.

Try to take all of that in, remember, you can't build chords till you understand scales. Once you think you got a handle on scales,
try and build a major scale in another key, if you feel particularly adventurous try F# Major and make sure you get the note names
right. After that here are a list of other kinds of scales you can use for your songs.

*note* WH means a whole and a half step between notes

Minor Scales-

Natural Minor: W-H-W-W-H-W-W

Harmonic Minor: W-H-W-W-H-WH-H

Melodic Minor: W-H-W-W-W-W-H


Modal Scales-

Dorian: W-H-W-W-W-H-W

Phrygian: H-W-W-W-H-W-W

Lydian: W-W-W-H-W-W-H

Mixolydian: W-W-H-W-W-H-W

Locrian: H-W-W-H-W-W-W

There are many more scales but these should be more than enough to suffice for quiet a while.

remember tho C minor is not C-D-D# etc. You can only have a letter in a scale once, hence sharps and flats. So even though D# and Eb are the same note in regards to frequency and location on the keyboard, when constructing chords they are not the same. So C minor is really C-D-Eb-F-G-Ab-Bb-C

Ill try to get around to starting a series on basic functional music theory up to some functional jazz since I see people are interested. I wont delve into too much actual theory since most of you probably wont need to analyze a piece of music in that regard, ill try to stay as practical as possible.

hahah dude you have no idea what your getting into...my degree is in both music and audio engineering and let me say music theory is one bitch of a subject. Circle of fifths is only going to help you know what sharps or flats you need to put a song into a particular key.

You are correct that most pads will sound more full with chords as opposed to single notes. If your basing your music on the bass then you'll need to choose chords that fit over that bass line. Something to keep in mind, we always assign chords and their names starting from the bass.

Remember scales (most of the time) will have 8 scale degrees. 1-2-3-4-5-6-7-8 with 1 and 8 being the same note displaced by an octave (double or half the fundamental frequency) So if your in C major as your key it would be 1=C, 2=D, 3=E, etc...until you get to 8=C. Another thing to keep in mind the the location of the half steps in the key, each note will two half steps apart except for 3 and 4, as well as 7 and 8, these are only a half step apart

So by that logic a I - V chord progression will have C and G as the bass notes in C major, D and A for G major, etc. Now the I - V chord progression is a major I chord followed by a major V chord, that is indicated by the fact that it is labeled I and not i, the lower case means minor.

The over simplified way to make a major chord is this...start with your bass note lets say C in C major. You will count up 4 half steps from C which will put you at E and then from E you will count up another 3 half steps which puts you at G. So a C major chord is C-E-G, a G major chord is G-B-D. So there you have it, the most basic chord progression I - V in C major.

This is a very complex subject if you want to have real control over your music and not just be a sample bitch using pre built chord samples but its highly worth learning trust me. The closest thing to a "dark" or moody chord is using a minor or diminished chord, possibly augmented. Minor is going to be the opposite of major, 3 half steps followed by 4 half steps. Diminished is 3 followed by 3 and Augmented is 4 followed by 4.

Remember, after you get your chord built from bottom to top, you now know the notes and you can put them in any order. Examples, C major is C-E-G, but so is E-G-C or G-C-E, these are called inversions, the E-G-C being 1st inversion and G-C-E being second inversion.

There is also the world of extended and altered chords which comes from jazz and they CAN BE very moody but are much much harder to implement since you have at bare minimum 4 notes now in a chord, not 3, usually more like 5 or 6 notes. If you want me to give you a basic intro write up I might do it time permitting, assuming others would find it useful as well.

got a chance to try it and hot damn its awesome! You can basically build any drum sound and if it ain't quiet right just assign it to a track and your good to go in the mixer for further tweaking. It does have velocity sensitivity which is freaking awesome hearing the sounds change as you change the midi velocity (if you download it click the top part of the pad vs the bottom part of the pad to hear dynamics)

In addition it has a built in step sequencer with velocity control there and you can assign them to the piano roll for easy switching between patterns (yes you can store a bank of patterns) supports 10 drum sounds which for me personally is more than enough

its only cheaper to build if your willing to put some money into it...aka cheaper parts are better bought pre assembled. My comp I built this summer cost around 4k with the speakers and a dell equivalent was about 7.5k with the speakers. But if I was going cheaper it might have been more advantageous to just buy it prebuilt.

And yes whats your budget and goals for the comp? If its strictly audio stuff then you can safe al ot but if its also a personal enjoyment comp as well as work like mine you'll spend an ass load more haha.

I personally have 0 issues reproducing mids on the HS 80s as alot of rock music I mix tends to be more mid heavy and be careful about adding subs, unless you know what your doing you could potentially get some nasty phase cancellation, and yes go to your local store that would carry monitors and bring a test CD, something that you know how it should sound and compare and contrast. Remember, go for clarity when picking monitors, not OMG DUDE LIKE THAT BASS IS RAWRSZORS!!!!11!!!!1!

my issue is im a playing musician so I like a almost live sound (and I play drums so acoustic drum n bass pwns in my book haha) and too to me that comes from having that masking and bleed but like I said I really respect people who can methodically sit there and clean it too perfection

general rule I follow is not to buy any monitors with cones smaller than 8 inches as anything smaller wont reproduce lower end accurately, have you looked into the HS-80s? I have a pair and they are beautifully flat and clear

I personally like my mixes to be a little more ruff as I like a more unified sound for what I do but I defiantly respect those who take the time to clean every little thing to perfection, im also guilty of picking keys that are not so kind to the drums and can cause masking at times but I kinda like it as I go for a more home/car listening style Listen not the next hot track at a club Woot

As an audio engineer and a musician I personally hate illegal downloading, particularly in a softwaresh sense. A music act can benefit from the popularity in illegal downloads of their music in the long run but seeing as not too many people actually use sample packs in their day to day lives, I personally find it unmoral but not like anyones going to stop you now an days.

I agree with halph price, just make your own, its all layering, filters, and eq at the end of the day anyways
