Opposite competition! 04-07-2008 14:21 Forum: Producers private board

easy now people;

basically we wanna start up a little competition (no prizes unless someone wants to donate!) where everyone makes a tune in their complete opposite style.

so dunno how to set this one up but im open to suggestions!!

was thinking of having about a week for everyone to enter - another week for everyone else to decide on everyone elses opposite style and then another couple of weeks to actually make the tune.

so first of all - whos up for it!?!

i am at least Big Grin

easy now,

this is a blinder of a tune! the ideas in this one are good, real good, good edits, lovely little glitches interspersed in there too. i really like what u done.

the downfall tho is the sound quality as u mentioned. once u fixed it up tho i would consider even paying for this one.

yeh about the headphones - i got exactly the same pair - so does Tomos aswell - if u hear his tracks they r fukin excellent for the sound quality. mind u when i got em, they took a little while to get used to. one tip i gotta say for producing on any speakers or headphones is to "compare it over n over". find a good quality tune which has good eqing in roughly the same style as your tune and then play ur tune, pause, play the other tune, pause and then think whats different. mixing them together should b saved for later on when ur satisfied with the eqin.

anyways, dont give up on the production just cos u aint got super duper overpriced shitty speakers (NS10s) - keep at it cos ur tunes r good

easy now,

yeh sound wise, i think most of the sounds sound good, they sit well in the mix - the squelchy bass tho, i rekon that could do with more layering or grit, it sounds like one sound at the mo. drums, the snare could do with a brighter specimen over the top of it imo, yeh they could be made a little more rolly too, i wouldnt complain if they had slightly more punch too. theres a shaker every 1/4, it sounds a little too prominent there, it could do with some more sounds to back it up in the higher spectrum.

easy now,

yeh brucie definately summed it up for me. agree with all those comments

have to agree with ur mates about the vocal, it dont quite sit right in my ears either. there a couple of points where it sounds like it goes a tiny bit off key in the singing. its not noticeable when u dont have much going on eg at the end but while the tune is running it dont sit right. u can get a vst which corrects singing going off key but i dont know how to use it! tbh tho, i rekon the vocal would be better used before n after the drop with minimal sounds going on. it did sound good at the end.

other than that, love the drum solo thing u got in the middle of the tune, the bass ideas r cool, cool track overall.

easy now,

agreeing with the other comments, the snare is too loud, the bass needs to be louder - or at least more noticeable - not enuff impact. also im not a big fan of those hihats either, they sound a bit basic - maybe a hipassed sample would be better here.

as for the tune itself tho, liking it. like this kind of dnb, makes me wanna gurn all over the dancefloor, sort the tune out engineering wise n send me a copy!

easy,

just checked ur tunage on the myspac - agree with all the comments before - i like the rythem of the drums but i dont like their sound - xyzan mentioned as well, they need more beef!

overall tho, this is a bo tune man, much better than the other one

keep it up

easy now,

cheeky little barstard! 2 songs in a row eh? Big Grin

anyways, yeh the tune, hav to agree with the other comments, i really like ur ideas, theres lots of variation in ur tunes, the melodies are sweet - u just need to work on making everything bigger n beefier i rekon. tbh im really not feeling the lead bit at 1:53, too happy for my taste.
once u get tha sound creation sorted tho then ur production will b sweet as imo.

easy,

nice sounds comin from ya, have to keep an ear out for u!

yeh wrm pretty much called it about the production - bass drum needs a slight boost, but that bass is heavy! i would like to hear the version with the acapella in it - this version sounds a little sparse but yeh - i rekon with the vocals in it it would b bad boy.

yeh about the bass drum - maybe sidechain it to hear em over the bass. another ting, the amen sounds a bit too low res for me on this end.

easy now

have to say the idea in this one is sweet - love this kind of dnb but it reminds me a lot of an old mampi swift remix...

yeh have to agree with the comment on the drums. they sound a bit too weak - you gota beef up those main hits, the hihat sound is too wishy washy for my taste, not a massive fan of the panning on them either. more edits on the drums would be good too, use lots of different loops to make it more hazard styleee. try sidechaining those main hits to make em punch thru more. also try boosting round 100hz for the main bass drum n 220hz for the main snare. itll work wonders. also more fx would be nice to keep the interest

have 2 say tho boss, love the ideas in ur tracks, sort out the engineering n ull b a force to rekon with
