Your price range doesnt leave a huge selection available to you. But there are a few gems out there for relatively cheap.

Really depends what kinda sounds and synth you want...

Might be worth having a look at novation stuff. I got a K Station not so long ago, really like it. Its digital, not analogue, It's built pretty solid, can get some really big warm sounds from it, loads of fun to play around with..
There's one on ebay.co.uk for £50 at the moment, will probably go for £250 maybe....

http://www.vintagesynth.com/novation/kstation.php

Also might be worth having a look for Oberheim stuff on Ebay as well. Really really good sounds, not always so easy to program, but awesome sound at cheap prices. Matrix 1000 is probably worth a look. You need to use sys ex to make you own patches, although there are 1000 premade ones on there to get you started. I think these go for around £300

http://www.vintagesynth.com/oberheim/mat1000.php

Oh, and maybe have a look at Yamaha DX/TX stuff, absolutely awesome FM bassed synths, again, tough to programme, but really awesome sounds.
Go for waay less than what theyre worth.

Hmm, loads more, just thought I'd mention a couple...

You're not gonna get anything super fancy for £300

Hi dude, cheers for the feedback. Glad you're digging the tracks, old and new! I had to kinda cut down on internets because of new job and so on. I miss the old days of moochin about the house and unlimited internet time =D

Assault is a pretty old one now, its one Ive been meaning to rework, tidy up a bit an so on. Just a lot of work I think, and I'm not quite ready to sit down and do it.

Cheers for the kind words tho, all the best

Hi dot be!!

It's been ages I know, and Im really bad for it. It's nothing personal you know, just a difficult time in my life. I still care about you and blah blah blah =D

Anyways, in an attempt to make up for it, and also (mainly) because there are some people on here who's ears an opinions I really trust. I thought I'd mention I just uploaded a load of new stuff onto my myspace finally.

There's 4 tracks new on there. Some kinda industrial thing, a super-fast hardcore/breakcore type thing, some ragga enfused mash up, and a dubstep 4/4 type thing. I'm gonna try and make a more regular thing of uploading stuff too.

Hope you guys get a chance to listen, any feedback is def appreciated.

Ah no, i tink maybe you misunderstood what I meant. I prolly didnt explain it properly. I cetrainly didnt mean that everyone has had bad experiances with labels. Just that I know they can happen, and I'd be interested as to what those experiances are. Whether its something that happened to you, or to someone you know.

Bad experiances with labels? 07-02-2009 13:14 Forum: Producers private board

Seems like most producers who've been producing for a while have had some form of interaction with labels, in one form or another. More often than not they've been bad ones.

Wondered if anyone on here had some stories to tell. Maybe we can all take somthing from learning from each others experiances and mistakes?

Hey man, cheers for the feedback.

Here last year has been a fkn busy one, ups n downs all over the place. Hopefully gonna have a slightly easier, more productive one for 2009.

With the snap snap tune, I used the intro for a couple different reasons. First up, cause I hear the drum oop from the intro used in a lot of jungle and DnB tunes. Was kinda referencing that I guess, second up just for shits n giggles. That tunes sums up pure cheesey music in my opinion. Naff synth line and aweful rapping. Its cool to play live cause people notice the intro n think they know whats coming.... Never thought of putting more of the tune in there, could be fun tho, might see if i can find the accapella.

Second tune is a remake of a track I posted up here w hile back I always liked the tune, but the mix itself was fkn aweul. So I made a remake pretty much fom scratch. Still a few things to sort out with it. Its proving pretty hard to make a tune sound both open and airy, and full and intense..

3rd tune is def an inportant one to me. Started writting it in a corner of Moscow airport. When I was travelling a year ago, My Girlfriend and I had our passports stolen on the Moscow metro, and we ended up stranded ithere for about a month before we could finally get new passports and visas etc etc. At one point we lived in the airport terminal for a few days. We'd found a quiet part of the airport to sleep in. My girlfreidn fell asleep and I fired up FL and started making this track. Its evolved a whole lot since then, but the melodies all came from then.

Really glad you enjoyed the tracks man, thanks for the helpful feedback. As for live mixes, Got a couple Im gonna upload, prob is that they've been recorded through a shitty mixer so Im gonna try and sort them out a bit first. Will put em on my myspace when I have done.

Would be cool if you guys can give me a little feedback, I know you can rely on this forum for some honest responses.

Yeah, someone mentioned already i think, just using midi cables. I have a laptop band with four friends of mine. 2 of use using reaktor, 1 on Ableton, and another with a kaoss pad an Nuendo. We sync everything just with midi cables and an external midi box. One of the midi man ones. The only thing that I'd suggest. Its worth making sure you can al run your soundcards at a low latency, also that you're all set to the same latency. Another thing, you should really try and avoid sending the midi clock from one computer into another and then on to the next. Far better if one person has the midi clock running and then send several midi outs. Otherwise you'll get all kinda timing issues. Oh, also, If you're all using midi controllers, try to make sure you're all working on different midi channels, otherwise you might get it some confusing results!!

Hmm, FL vid was pure toss... Ah well, I think mastering is something which isnt so easily summerised in a ew minutes of youtube quality audio.

One thing, I dunno about putting an EQ after a compressor, multiband or otherwise.. Why compress frequencies which you are then later gonna remove or boost. Surely that means your compressor is compensating for Frequencies which are undesirable anyway?? I dunno, maybe Im wrong, Could someone explain the logic behind it?

Hahaha, crazy.

I cant remember how long ago it was that I posted this tune up, a long long time ago I think.
Its really cool to see that people are still listening to it, and great that people are leaving comments too! Thanks a lot!

I have played around a little with this tune since I last posted it, but I kinda think of this tune as an on going project. Something that will never really be "finished" but something I enjoy changing, improving, and trying out more ideas on.

I've been more busy with a lot of new stuff, loads of stuff since this tune. Some tracks are on an EP that got released last year, its on my myspace if anyone is interested. And more recently I've been working fkn hard on a couple vinyl releases which will be out hopefully later this year. Will keep everyone posted.

Once again, thanks for taking the time to listen and write comments.

Funny stuff. Devvo is entirely made up. Sorry to ruin it for all of you but its just a character. Yeah there are chavs in the UK and some of them are pretty bad, but devvo is not one of them. Just an actor.

Heres a bit of fun.

Find a page with some pics on it, Google image search for example.

paste this into the address bar

java script:R=0; x1=.1; y1=.05; x2=.25; y2=.24; x3=1.6; y3=.24; x4=300; y4=200; x5=300; y5=200; DI=document.getElementsByTagName("img"); DIL=DI.length; function A(){for(i=0; i-DIL; i++){DIS=DI[ i ].style; DIS.position='absolute'; DIS.left=(Math.sin(R*x1+i*x2+x3)*x4+x5)+"px"; DIS.top=(Math.cos(R*y1+i*y2+y3)*y4+y5)+"px"}R++}setInterval('A()',5); void(0);

Then, remove the space between the words Java and script.

Then click the go button.

Weeeee! Pretty!

Yeah, i reakon multi-band compressor and a limiter is the way to go.

A lot of it depends on the quality of your mix in the first place tho. You need it to be as full and even through all frequencies as possible. If your bass end is too loud it will affect the master limiter when you're trying to bring the volume up.

What I tend to do is mix everything in FL. The export the wav at quite a low volume, and open it into Logic.

The use the multiband compressor just slightly like an EQ. Then use a waves limiter to bring the volume up. I think this part kinda comes down to taste. You can limit it so hard that the entire mix is hitting 0 db, but I prefer more dynamics, so I just watch and make sure that only the big hits etc are really pushing the limiter.

I think mastering is as much about taste as technicalities.

Ultimately tho, even astonishing mastering skills cannot rescue a bad mix down. Thats should be your first port of call.

No serious, Vocoder does exactly what you describe. You can get some super complex ones, depends on the number of bands it has.

There are other things you can try to get a simliar kinda effect, maybe putting the sample into melodyne perhaps. But in all honesty, a vocoder is what you're describing.
