grooverider is one of my favorite producers...
i don't know how much respect he's getting these days, but he was one of the founders of the scene and he won't be forgotten for that "coffee shop" drum n' bass that he created in that cd.

yeah, its pretty nice for a homemade break, sounds fairly realistic. now i realize i probably didn't read the challenge right, the one i made still sounds way too programmed Tongue
lemme slap another on y'all.

yeah i do all kinds of stuff. its a lot easier to do when you can see the sound waves of the sample, i.e. in acid or wavelab.
you can also add some (barely stereo, small room) reverb with an abrupt tail and see if that helps by itself, or use it combined with the trick above to mask the edit.
or you could just avoid those abrupt, crappy snare samples all together. i hate em. Big Grin

quick and easy, but it doesn't get in-depth enough for me...for example, if one of the slices is clipping on the edges, i can't fade them in fruity, but i can in acid...

well i think its a fine idea. i dont know if you wanted us to upload the project file or just a wav loop but here's the wav loop:

http://s54.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=02NPX...N004GEW8UK3KYJO

NOTE: THIS LINK IS ONLY OPEN FOR 7 DAYS...of course if more ppl want the break for any crazy reason, i'll renew

you're free to use this break if you want to, it's just an example of my simpler patterns, and i don't really feel attachment to it.

if anybody has any questions on my technique ask away...this one is 100% FL-produced, with no third-party effects except for my compressor.

and also, i'd like to see if you enjoy this one, rate.

in acid, you turn the break into a one shot sample and then shift the b.p.m. until it matches up. if you don't like the tempo you're at after that, pitch up the one shot and match with the bpm again to have it faster. do the opposite, pitch it down, to make it slower. i hope you understand what i'm talking about...and that helps you with at least one of the programs listed.

that warmth is produced with either good equipment or lots of eqing practice. sometimes a not-so-warm drumbreak can do just as well, though. i've heard very plain drumbeats in pro tracks.
anyway the togetherness is usually achieved by getting a good sampled break in there or some rides, whatever, something to give everything a nice human swing along; so youi shouldnt have too many qualms with using others' breaks, man...especially since most if not all of the hits you have are likely already sampled from funk breaks Tongue
get the cleanest samples you can find, thats a number one thing.
also the warmth of a break may not actually be the break itself but a multiband compressor over the entire mastered song that brings it out.
but the biggest thing i gotta tell you is get over your beliefs! theres great breaks to sample out there with the tightest sounds imaginable! i always get better results when i dig, not when i hit the sample packs.

a classic break layered with an original drumbeat really moves everything along.
plus don't make your changeups sound like a sleepy guy is editing them, make them fast and alert. also make sure all your drum elements have good punch and throw in a good number of smartly placed kicks. they're a really essential element of drive. basically keep everything in a progressive structure, dont opt for a long, slowly changing melody on the bassline: do something choppy with adequate rhythm and coolness. leave the melody to your other elements.

there is a distinct limit on compression tho. the way i check if there's too much is, i drop out my track on one sound like a melody at a certain point, and if you have the sense that that melody pops out like air out of a balloon filled to bursting, there's too much compression, you've packed things in too tightly. you can get away with tons of compression in rap beats, but dnb is faster and has sound peaks flying everywhere, so its a whole different game and the compressor and limiter have to try much harder to keep up. you've got to be much more careful with what you do.
and i don't know about phasing your entire track, J.Wells.
whether setting channels off by a tiny amount of time or not, i dont mess with that. you can do it to separate sounds but personally, if you're trying to open up the stereo field, do it by panning sounds and phattening them with phaser and chorus while you're producing, not doing it all at once afterwards. and do it on headphones.
(p.s.) brick wall limiters such as the one in the ultra-rare nomad factory pack are mm mm good, very good.

it's funny because it's true isn't it, surora? the drunken finger master of typing.

anyway who says we couldnt use flps...that way maybe we could upload some bass flps and people could look into your mixer channel and see what all you do to your basslines from synthesis to resampling.

that's a question that's asked so much around here: What do you make your basslines with and if any what effects or eqing do you do afterward?; so maybe we could finally have a place to point em. i remember there wasn't enough crap like that around while i was learning so it would be nice to see some pop out.

of course there's the problem of the person recieving the flp having the same vsts used or not but whatever...just an idea.

assuming that these are basslines you don't mind throwing into the populace's hands...

im the one guy who voted acid...im a sampling obsessor, and the beatmatching is on point. i sequence everything in there.
i produce some of my sounds in logic 5.5 tho, with the killer ES2. and i use the sampler a lot for soundfonts. i also run most vstis i have thru fruity and bounce from there. i would do the synths in acid, but it has little to no automation available as of yet, and it's really buggy with vstis.
i like many programs, but im not comfortable with them. in acid i forget my hand is on a mouse, i feel like im floating in a creative space.
