amen eq

alrite was just wondered how everyone else eq's their amen's iv tried a few different ways just wanted to see what everyone else did eeezzeee

Boosting high freqs and the kick freq. That high-freq madness the (tr)amen has, the sizzling hi-hats, it's making me nuts.

amen is used to fill out the track with higher frequencies. boost the high end to taste i guess.

i usually do more than eq: i hipass it till there are no more kicks, overdrive distortion for mid rumble and noise, excite for sparklin highs, re eq, compress or sometimes gate/compress.
deadbold is right the amen is usually made to fill the mid-gap between one shots and to add fluidity to the whole break.

I don't use the amen anymore, just on rare occasions I use bits of it for layering. In that case I EQ it in such away (mostly bandpass) that the bits I use stick out just enough to color the other drums.

There are so many variations of the amen break around (I think I have about 250 and that's just the ones I liked enough to keep), I really wonder why you need to EQ it a lot, just pick a version you like, EQ out anything you don't need (e.g. low end) rearrange, add your own drums (very important) to stay away from the 1994-revisited-boredom and there you go.

I agree w/ BD for sure. I've got loads of amens, but unlike others, i fricken use them religiously!!! LOL I do a touch of EQ, typically a little high-end boost. And maybe layer the kick depending on the choon.

I recently worked on the amen for a choon i just did for hours and hours. I was modeling it after Breakage's "foundation" tune, which is just sick btw.

Anyways, i settled on layering a "clean" amen w/out a lot of cymbal hiss over one w/ a little more sizzle. The result was a decent balance b/t the crisp cymbal of the clean break w/ a little dirtiness to thicken it up.

Although, i just went back and had a listen... its just okay
